Longest Serving Employee Trades In for Retirement After Half A Century’s Service

After 49 years of service our long-standing Service Technician Steve Smith calibrated his last vehicle on Friday 1 st May 2015.

Steve joined us straight after college in 1966 after gaining an indentured apprentice, and has remained here ever since!

After almost five decades with York Ward & Rowlatt, there’s not much that our longest serving team member doesn’t know about motor maintenance. Beginning his apprenticeship in motor mechanics, Steve initially worked on lorries, until an opening came up on cars. Since then, he has turned his hand to many different areas of the business including maintenance, repair, petrol pumps, MOTs and breakdowns.

General Manager, Nick Hughes said: “Completing 49 years service at just one company is a tremendous achievement. Steve’s been a reliable and consistent member of our maintenance team and has looked after the vehicles as if they were his own pride and joy over the years. He will be missed by colleagues and customers alike and we hope he enjoys many years’ relaxing retirement.”

Steve commented: “I’ve really enjoyed working here at York Ward & Rowlatt. The company houses a great bunch of people and I’ve formed some life-long friendships here. I’m sad to close the door on this chapter of my life, but I’m also looking forward to being able to spend time looking after my fish and learning the art of bonsai!”
