Summer is most definitely on it’s way, so if you’ve not been making the most of the lighter, warmer evenings or sunny weekends by washing your car and making sure it’s in tip top condition, let’s get ready for everyone’s favourite driving season!
As well as making sure your most precious possession is shiny on the outside and sparkling on the inside, it’s also worth making sure that the air-conditioning is in full working order as the last thing you’ll need is it packing up on one of those rare hot summer days!
Air-conditioning maintenance is easily over-looked and as it doesn’t affect the roadworthiness of a car, it isn’t covered in the regular vehicle service. Basic upkeep is easy and will help ensure it’s working when you need it. One of the simplest ways you can keep it in good order is to use it all year round.
When used infrequently, moisture can build up in the pipes and vents, which breeds fungus, bacteria and mould. This can produce a bad smell in your car and in severe cases could contribute to minor health problems such as sore throats or headaches.
Neglecting your car’s air-con can also lead to expensive mechanical problems further down the line. Like other parts of your car, the air-conditioning system also needs regular attention to make sure it is working efficiently. Potentially, over 10 per cent of air-con gas permeates from the system every year, which means that unless serviced regularly, it may not work as well as it should, so if your vehicle is more than two years old it’s probably due a recharge.
Top Tip: In winter, use your air conditioning to demist the windscreen! Air-Con systems create dry warm air rather than the normal humid air from outside and this de-mists your car windscreen more quickly.
